18 Nov 2019

Party members make up 19.1% of Belarus’ new parliament

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – Members of political parties comprise 19.1% of the new House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina told reporters on 18 November.

110 people were elected to the 110-seat House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament. “19.1% of them or 21 people are members of political parties,” Lidia Yermoshina said. The Agrarian Party will be represented by one MP. The Liberal Democratic Party will also have on representative. The Belarus Patriotic Party has won two seats. The Communist Party of Belarus was the most successful party in this race with 11 party members in the new parliament. It was followed by the Republican Party of Labor and Justice  (6 MPs). “The previous parliament comprised 16 political party members,” Lidia Yermoshina recalled.

A total of 44 women MPs were elected to the new parliament, which represents a significant increase from 34.5% to 40%, Lidia Yermoshina informed. “The women candidates that won the seats are really the best – smart, beautiful and famous. I hope that this will improve the image of the parliament and its work,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

There are also two MPs under 30 years of age. Thirty people or 27.3% of MPs were re-elected.

Lidia Yermoshina told reporters that she had only four hours of sleep this night, but she was satisfied with the administration of the electoral process. “It is great to go to bed with a feeling of duty fulfilled, without the worm of doubt. This is the best reward I could wish for myself,” she added. Some remarks regarding the election conduct will be processed. “This is the groundwork for the most important election campaign [Belarus’ president election], so we will take them into account,” the CEC chief said.
