MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) - Chairman of the Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev will lead an observation mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States during the elections of deputies to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus. His candidacy was agreed upon during a meeting of the CIS council of permanent plenipotentiary representatives in the CIS statutory and other bodies, BelTA has learned.

The CIS mission will soon begin its work in Belarus, Sergei Lebedev told media. “We received the invitation. As soon as the mission is formed, it will begin its work,” he said.

“We will maintain close contact with all government agencies in Belarus responsible for the conduct of the elections,” the head of the mission noted. “We have always received a nice open welcome and got assistance in implementing the objectives of the CIS observation mission. We did our best to do monitoring objectively, benevolently and in compliance with the laws of the Republic of Belarus. So we will this time,” Sergei Lebedev informed.

The CIS mission is traditionally invited to observe the preparation and conduct of elections in Belarus. It consists of long-term and short-term observers. The mission publishes its findings after an election campaign.

The elections to the House of Representatives will be held on 11 September.
