Council of Europe to deploy observers for elections in Belarus on 13 November

MINSK, 16 October (BelTA) – Observers of the Council of Europe are scheduled to arrive in Belarus for the observation of the elections to the House of Representatives of the seventh convocation on 13 November, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina told the media on 16 October, BelTA has learned.

According to the CEC head, the Council of Europe has notified Belarus on the deployment of a mission of its observers. “The mission is expected to come on 13 November,” she said.

On 15 October, the CEC members met with head of the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission Corien Jonker. “We briefed them on what was done after the elections were called. It was purely a briefing where we provided information and handed certificates,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

The first OSCE/ODIHR mission comprises over 30 people. “These are the ones who will be working ahead of the voting. The OSCE/ODIHR core team will arrive on 13-15 November,” the CEC chairperson added.

As of 14 October, a total of 326 international observers were accredited to monitor the parliamentary elections in Belarus. The number includes 278 specialists from the CIS and 42 from the OSCE/ODIHR.

The elections to the House of Representatives are scheduled for 17 November.
