GOMEL, 11 September (BelTA) – The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus believes that there will be a big number of prospective candidates during this year’s parliamentary elections in Belarus, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina told the media ahead of a meeting in the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee on 11 September, BelTA has learned.

According to the CEC head, many initiative groups have been registered in the country to collect signatures in support for candidates to the Belarusian government. The data on the initiative groups are regularly updated. “Many of them use the election campaign to promote their personal programs. These are mainly campaign events such as meetings at public venues. The canvassing campaign is also underway. The groups have already started their work. I think we will have enough prospective candidates to choose from,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

According to the CEC head, national observers are present at all the precinct and district election commissions. “As for the central commission alone, seven political parties and public associations have already accredited their observers. We have 17 international observers from the CIS headquarters. They have already started visiting different regions,” Lidia Yermoshina said. We expect the arrival of the OSCE long-term observers soon, she added.

On 11 September, Gomel played host to a meeting to discussed the ongoing election campaign, its main stages.
