Belarus beat Switzerland 3-2 in Fed Cup semifinal tie

MINSK, 23 April (BelTA) – Arina Sobolenko beat Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to secure an overall victory for Belarus over Switzerland, 3-2, in the Fed Cup semifinal tie at Chizhovka Arena, BelTA has learned.

Earlier on the day, Aleksandra Sasnovich defeated Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

On the first matchday, Aleksandra Sasnovich saw off Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, while Timea Bacsinszky beat Arina Sobolenko 6-4, 7-5.

Olga Govortsova and Vera Lapko lost 0-6, 1-6 to Martina Hingis and Belinda Bencic in the dead rubber.

Belarus will play the United States in the Fed Cup final on 11-12 November.

Lukashenko congratulates Belarusian tennis players on Fed Cup semifinal victory

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Belarus President, President of the National Olympic Committee Alexander Lukashenko congratulated the Belarusian national tennis team of Aleksandra Sasnovich, Arina Sobolenko, Olga Govortsova and Vera Lapko on the victory in the Fed Cup World Group semifinal tie against Switzerland, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

“In front of your numerous fans and a huge TV audience you have demonstrated a great game, high sport skills and an iron will to win. It is a historic achievement for the Belarusian tennis and one of the brightest victories of the national sport, which shows that our country has a lot of sport talents,” the message of greetings runs.

“Well done. Keep it that way. I wish you strong health and new achievements for the benefit of Belarus,” the head of state noted.
