Fasel: 2021 IIHF World Championship may be postponed
Rene Fasel

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) – President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Rene Fasel said that the 2021 IIHF World Championship in Minsk and Riga may be postponed until 2022, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation.

“We can see that it is simply impossible to hold the championship amid today’s conditions. All the ice hockey leagues, including KHL and NHL, have been canceled. It is early to speak about the world championship which is to be hosted by Minsk and Riga. We need to track the situation. All further decisions will be taken by the IIHF Council. We have a contract with Belarus and Latvia for next year, and a contract with Finland for 2022. As for today, the next championship is to take place in Belarus and Latvia, but everything can change,” the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation cited Rene Fasel as saying.

The 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Lausanne and Zurich has been canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The 2021 edition is scheduled to take place in Belarus and Latvia. The IIHF World Championship is to be hosted by Finland in 2022, by Russia in 2023, by the Czech Republic in 2024, and by Sweden and Denmark in 2025.
