Belarus, Latvia in talks over transportation of fans at 2021 IIHF World Championship

MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) – Belarus and Latvia are discussing transportation of fans during the 2021 IIHF World Championship that will be co-hosted by Belarus and Latvia, Belarusian Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Andrei Ivanov told reporters on 30 September following a meeting of the working group on transport of the Latvia-Belarus intergovernmental commission for cooperation in economy, manufacturing, science and technology, BelTA has learned.

“Today we have discussed preparations for the 2021 IIHF World Championship, including transportation of passengers and interaction between the customs and border services. We might offer some preferential terms of crossing the border; several options are on the table. We will do our best to make sure fans will not encounter any inconveniences while crossing the border,” Andrei Ivanov said.

Deputy State Secretary at the Latvian Ministry of Transport Uldis Reimanis emphasized that all organizational matters will be dealt with very seriously, including matters related to transportation. Extra train services are under consideration. “Our specialists are already working to ensure fast and smooth border crossing and customs clearance of fans at border checkpoints,” he noted.

Since the start of the year the amount of cargo transportation between the two countries has somewhat dropped compared with the same period in 2018. “We believe that it is just a phase. Today we have discussed measures to reverse the negative trend,” Andrei Ivanov said.

The working group also discussed cooperation in railway, automobile, aviation and road transportation.
