CEC: International observers describe Belarus' election as democratic and open

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – According to assessments of international observers, the election in Belarus was democratic and open, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Igor Karpenko told journalists, BelTA reports.

“We have communicated a lot with international observers. A total of 486 international observers from 52 countries, including 17 countries of Western Europe, monitored the election in our country. These observers came from all the continents except for Australia. During the observation period, at the meetings, and now after the election, everyone emphasized that the electoral process was democratic, open, and transparent. They were free to inspect any polling station and talk to voters, which they did. They emphasized that there were many journalists, and one could voice their opinions freely and openly,” Igor Karpenko said.

The sheer number of international observers indicates that the interest in our election was quite high and that Belarus was open and welcoming for observers who could see for themselves that the election was held in line with Belarusian laws, he added.
