MINSK, 15 May (BelTA) – 15 May is the deadline to submit applications to register initiative groups for nominating candidates for the 2020 Presidential Election in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

The initiative group should comprise at least 100 people. The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus decides on the registration of initiative groups within five days after the documents are submitted.

Once registered the initiative group will be able to collect signatures in support to its candidate from 21 May to 19 June. In the light of the unfavorable epidemiological situation, signature collectors are required to wear face masks and gloves.

At least 100,000 signatures need to be collected for the candidate to take place in the race for the presidential post.

As BelTA reported earlier, the House of Representatives scheduled the presidential election in Belarus for 9 August. According to the election timetable, the nomination of candidates will take place from 20 June to 4 July, their registration – from 5 to 14 July. The pre-election campaigning will start after that. Early voting is due to take place on 4-8 August. The Central Election Commission will sum up the results of the election before 19 August. The second round if needed will take place before 23 August.
