SCO Secretary General: Electoral campaign in Belarus was open

MINSK, 12 October (BelTA-TASS) - The president electoral campaign in Belarus was open; the attitude towards observers was respectful, the head of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) mission to observe the election in Belarus, SCO Secretary General Dmitry Mezentsev told the TASS news agency.

"We talked with observers from various parties, political structures, associations, trade unions, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee. There were issues but the tone of the conversation with them confirms, too, that the election was open, the attitude towards observers was respectful," he said.

Dmitry Mezentsev said that this is the first time that the SCO mission monitors the president election in Belarus and that they came at the invitation of the Central Election Commission. "We visited various regions of Belarus. The election took place in a very relaxed environment, we did not notice any violations of public order,” said Dmitry Mezentsev. According to him, the SCO observers "carefully watched how the requirements of the electoral legislation were observed". He noted that the Belarusian electoral legislation "ensures equal rights of citizens to exercising their civic duty."

When speaking about his personal impressions from visiting polling sites, Dmitry Mezentsev said that they were in very good condition, the members of the electoral commissions were friendly.

"It is a special day for Belarus which is building its own way and is actively developing its relations within the framework of the Belarus-Russia Union State, the Eurasian Economic Union and today is reaching a new level in the relations with the SCO," said Dmitry Mezentsev.
