MINSK, 12 October (BelTA) – PACE is ready to cooperate with Belarus in reforming the country’s election legislation, Reha Denemec, Head of the PACE Delegation, told media on 12 October, BelTA informs.
“An election is not limited to voting day. Therefore, Belarus needs to reform its legal framework to ensure a thoroughly competitive political environment. This is a key condition for the long-term democratic stability of the country. PACE, together with the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission, stands ready to cooperate with Belarus on this,” said Reha Demenec.
According to observers, shortcomings in the legislation included unclear rules for setting up polling stations as well as the process of verifying voters’ signatures by territorial election commissions. Besides, the report took note of the lack of insufficient procedural security measures in the counting and tabulation of votes.
