Optimism about election organization in Belarus

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – Optimism is felt about the organization of the election process in Belarus. The relevant statement was made by Hans-Jurgen Zahorka, a member of the group of international observers known as the alliance of election observation missions, BelTA has learned.

According to the observer, if the election receives positive evaluation and the situation continues developing along the same lines, it will be a very important step towards Belarus’ membership in the Council of Europe. Hans-Jurgen Zahorka once again underlined he hopes that the election would proceed in a positive manner.

Representatives of the election observation mission noted that their group comprises ten international observers, who will be assisted by Belarusian personnel, including sociology students.

Hans-Jurgen Zahorka told mass media that they are going to closely analyze how the election campaign is covered by mass media. “We represent a delegation that will very scrupulously analyze mass media taking into account quantity and quality parameters,” he said. The group of international observers will also pay close attention to the general atmosphere in the country. The observer added that it was not his first visit to Belarus. He used to work as a professor in Minsk in the past.

The alliance of election observation missions is a group of international observers, which includes the European Institute Libertas (Germany), the European Foundation for Democracy (Belgium), and the European Democracy Institute (France). The group of election observers focuses on monitoring the Belarus president election. The observers will analyze the pre-election situation, will work on the election day, and will monitor the situation after the election as well.
