Opinion: Belarusians voted for stability, peace

MOGILEV, 13 October (BelTA) – Belarusians have voted for stability and peace at the country's recent presidential election, Chairman of the Mogilev Oblast organization Belaya Rus, Rector of the Mogilev State University of Food Technologies Vyacheslav Sharshunov told BelTA.

In his words, people who voted for Alexander Lukashenko supported the course chosen by the current head of state 20 years ago. The country, being sovereign and independent, has been steadily developing. People understand and appreciate it. External factors also played a big role in the voting. In particular, the armed conflict in Ukraine once again proved that revolutions and the change of power through violent military coups can bring nothing good. The neighboring country faces economic chaos, the split of the society, and social catastrophe today. Belarusians do not want such development, said Vyacheslav Sharshunov.

No one can blame the authorities for the closed election, the lack of alternative. In Belarus’ contemporary history candidates have never had such freedom and opportunities for the pre election campaign in labor collectives and mass media. Thousands of domestic and international observers monitored the preparations for the voting and the election campaign itself. The overwhelming majority of them praised the organization of the vote, strict observation of the election legislation, responsible and professional work of election commissions.

“A high voter turnout showed political activity and literacy of our people. Belarusians understand that the future of the country depends on their choice. That is why they came to the polls to make their choice, casting the majority of their ballots in support of the incumbent head of state, peace in their homes and families, economic stability, progressive reforms and prosperity of Belarus,” stressed Vyacheslav Sharshunov.
