Gaidukevich: United Nations needs change

MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) – The structure of the United Nations Organization needs change, candidate for the post of the President of Belarus Sergei Gaidukevich told the First National Channel of the Belarusian Radio on 30 September, BelTA has learned.

“The United Nations was established to maintain international peace and security, promote cooperation between countries. 70 years after World War Two the world has changed; unfortunately, this organization has failed to ensure peace all over the world. Let’s recall the Korean crisis, Afghanistan, Vietnam, the tragedy in Yugoslavia. Evaluating the activities of the United Nations, I can say that it has been working with a 50/50 efficiency so far. The organization loses momentum sometimes; therefore, it is high time to change its structure,” the candidate said.

According to the politician, Belarus should not only speak about this issue but also take an active part in its resolution. “We should have a bigger say in the United Nations which is the most influential negotiations platform. There are no alternatives to the United Nations yet, and, probably, will never be,” he said.

The candidate reminded that Belarus partakes in UN programs which benefit the state. “We take an active part in educational, cultural, political, economic and ecological projects. We are not against positive and constructive activities of international foundations in Belarus. I am not against interaction, but I want to stress that the anti-Belarusian rhetoric in these foundations is inadmissible,” he said.

Sergei Gaidukevich also stressed that Belarus should remain a sovereign and independent state. “You remember that even in the Soviet Union Belarus had its own representation in the United Nations Organization. Belarus is an independent and sovereign country. 25 years has passed since the country gained independence and everyone must reckon with this fact,” he is convinced.
