Belarus-Russia Union MPs to observe presidential election in Belarus

MOSCOW, 5 October (BelTA) – Members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia will take part in observing the presidential election in Belarus as part of the observation mission sent by the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Assembly’s press service told BelTA.

The delegation will comprise representatives of both chambers of the Russian parliament and personnel of the Parliamentary Assembly secretariat. The delegation will be led by Leonid Slutsky, member of the Information Policy Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia, Chairman of the State Duma’s Committee for CIS affairs, Eurasian integration, and relations with compatriots.

According to the source, the MPs are experienced in working as international observers. In the past delegations of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia monitored election processes in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Russia, South Ossetia and other countries.

The MPs will visit polling stations in Minsk and the oblast, in Vitebsk Oblast, Brest Oblast, and Grodno Oblast.

As part of the observation process the MPs intend to hold a number of meetings with top administrators of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, oblast election commissions, and representatives of regional legislative and executive bodies of Belarus. Results of the observation mission will be summed up at a press conference on 12 October.
