Ananich: Equal conditions in mass media for all presidential candidates

MINSK, 15 July (BelTA) – The mass media of Belarus will provide people with the right to information and equal conditions for presidential candidates in order to make their electoral campaigns and proposals widely known to every voter in the country, Information Minister Lilia Ananich said at the meeting of the board of the Belarusian Union of Women on 15 July, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, the presidential election is the hour of truth for the country which has been a sovereign state for 20 years. “The country’s policy has been endorsed by the Belarusian people, the policy that repeatedly showed that our country had chosen the course that any state can be proud of,” she stressed.

According to Lilia Ananich, Belarus’ information space is open. There are 1,500 national printed mass media outlets, two thirds of which are non-government. Over 3,000 foreign media and about 200 TV channels are available in the country, let alone the Internet. “Our opponents will not shun any means during the election campaign to discredit the Belarusian reality. We can see it in the Internet already today. We have certain levers of influence in line with the law on mass media. I believe women can help form the public opinion as well,” Lilia Ananich said.

“I think women, the Belarusian Union of Women, should take an active part in the pre-election campaign, telling about our life, our families and plans for the future. We do not need to prove anything. We are a developed country. We see how much has been done and we will be able to do more if we are united,” the minister stressed.

In her words, the Belarusian Union of Women should call upon all participants of the election campaign for a politically correct election campaigning. This proposal was supported at the meeting. “I think women have the right to call upon the participants of the election campaign not to dishonor their country and their people,” Lilia Ananich said.
