MINSK, 14 February (BelTA) – A two-day seminar for people who will work as volunteers at the 2nd European Games 2019 took place in Minsk. The seminar was arranged by the Directorate of the 2nd European Games 2019 and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Office in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the directorate.

Experts working at the UNICEF headquarters and the UNICEF Office in Belarus shared their best practices and knowledge of global volunteering. Taking part in the event were representatives of national sports federations and regional sports officials.

“The seminar is an example of our successful cooperation with the UNICEF Office in Belarus, which is a national partner of the 2nd European Games. It is important that one of the United Nations most reputable organizations sets much store by the 2nd European Games. We are happy that we have embarked on an interesting joint project that has to do with volunteering.  About 9,000 volunteers are preparing for the games. It is important to preserve this level of volunteer engagement in the future. We hope that together we will be able to build and retain a solid volunteer base as a social legacy of the 2nd European Games. We also hope to earn recognition and support at the international level. We want our joint project to set an example of volunteer engagement in other countries of the world. We want to show how to use multi-sport competitions or other events to bring together people who want to help and keep them motivated in the future,” Anatoly Kotov, Deputy CEO of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC), said.

UNICEF representative in Belarus and one of the Star Ambassadors of the 2nd European Games Dr. Rashed Mustafa Sarwar noted that this seminar will not be the only event of this kind. He expressed hope that the parties will keep collaborating as part of other social projects. “We believe that after the 2nd European Games we will have a large group of volunteers who will help us with various projects,” he noted.

Minsk will host the 2nd European Games on 21-30 June 2019. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 199 medal events in 15 sports. Competitions in eight sports will serve as qualifiers for the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo.
