UN secretary general invited to attend European Games opening ceremony in Minsk

MINSK, 5 October (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei gave UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres an invitation from Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to pay an official visit to Belarus and to attend the opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games in Minsk in June 2019, BelTA learned from the ministry’s press service.

The head of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs met with the UN secretary general on 4 October. During the meeting the parties discussed the issues related to the repositioning of the development system, restructuring of peace and security pillar in the context of the 2030 Agenda.

Belarus expressed its support for the UN secretary general's initiatives “Youth 2030” and “Generation Unlimited" designed to get every young person into quality education, training or employment by 2030.

For his part, Antonio Guterres highly appreciated the active work of Belarus in the United Nations, in particular, in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and maintaining regional security.

While in the United States, Vladimir Makei met with President of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder. The parties discussed promising areas of cooperation, participation in joint events and projects, the status and prospects for the development of Belarus-United States relations.

Vladimir Makei invited the World Jewish Congress to take part in the Days for the Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of Extermination of the Minsk Ghetto scheduled in Minsk on 22-23 October 2018.

Vladimir Makei also met with Director of the Jewish Museum in New York City Claudia Gould. The parties discussed cooperation between Belarusian museums and the Jewish Museum in New York. During his visit to the museum, the Belarusian diplomat saw the exhibition of works by avant-garde artists of the Vitebsk school “Chagall, Lissitzky, Malevich” which includes a number of works provided by the museums of Minsk and Vitebsk.
