Second European Games in Belarus

Two runways in Minsk airport for 2nd European Games

Two runways in Minsk airport for 2nd European Games

MINSK, 5 June (BelTA) – Two runways will be in use in the Minsk National Airport during the 2nd European Games, BelTA learned from Belarusian Transport and Communications Minister Anatoly Sivak.

The Belarusian transport industry focuses on three massive projects in anticipation of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. Building the second runway is the first one. “We can definitely welcome guests using one runway but it would be wrong. The new runway will be commissioned this year. It should be operational in the course of the games. We don’t intend to shut down the first runway for an overhaul right away,” said the official. The Minsk National Airport will offer a higher class of service because the two runways are designed to work simultaneously. A more convenient schedule for regular flights and charter flights will be available then.

The M6 Minsk-Grodno motorway is the second massive project. The road will be opened to traffic along its entire length this year. “This motorway should work for the benefit of our citizens and visitors. It should help enhance the country’s transit appeal,” noted Anatoly Sivak.

Renewing the transport fleet is the third project. The Belarusian air carrier Belavia is busy implementing an investment project to buy three Embraer 195 aircraft and further renew its aircraft fleet. The Minsk city administration intends to buy about 300 buses and 60 electric buses for transporting the visitors. As the host country Belarus needs to honor its commitments concerning the transportation of participants of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. As many as 105 intercity-class buses will be bought with this in mind. “We will have to transport certain guests by car: about 300 cars will be bought for it. The vendor has not been determined yet but I can say that the vehicles will be of Belarusian make,” said the official.

On the whole, all the branches of the transport industry are involved in preparations for the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019. The railway administration is expected to traditionally sign documents with partners from neighboring countries in order to arrange additional trains.
