Team Belarus outperform all expectations at 2nd European Games in Minsk

MINSK, 8 July (BelTA) – The performance of Team Belarus at the 2nd European Games surpassed expectations of fans, Belarusian First Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister, chef de mission at the 2nd European Games Vyacheslav Durnov said at a press conference hosted by BelTA on 8 July.

Vyacheslav Durnov noted: “Before the start of the European Games we were planning to perform as well as we did at the 1st European Games in Baku in 2015 (43 medals). But Belarusian athletes surpassed the expectations of fans and our plans. The Belarusian team won medals in many sports, except for several ones: badminton, table tennis. As a result of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 Belarusian athletes won two licenses for the Olympic Games in Tokyo: Yury Shcherbatsevich in rifle and pistol shooting and Tatsiana Khaladovich in javelin throwing. In the near future we will invite all the prizewinners of the games to the Sports and Tourism Ministry and will thank them for their performance and the positive emotions they have given to all the fans.”

Vyacheslav Durnov also thanked the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC), the ministries and government agencies involved in organizing such a large-scale sport forum.

According to Vyacheslav Durnov, the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 had a positive impact on the number of tourists. “The guests liked our sport facilities. For instance, one of the largest Russian banks is already considering the possibility of arranging a corporate sport tournament in Minsk for over 3,000 participants,” he stressed.

As a result of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 the Belarusian team won 69 medals: 24 gold, 16 silver, and 29 bronze medals. The team included 221 athletes.

The 2nd European Games took place in Minsk on 21-30 June. As many as 4,000 athletes from 50 countries competed in 15 sports.

The official motto of the 2nd European Games was Bright Year, Bright You. The logo was a fern flower that has a symbolic meaning in Slavic culture. Lesik the Fox was the official mascot.
