European Games medalists from Belarus to help sponsor sport schools

MINSK, 19 June (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes who will win medals in the 2nd European Games in Minsk will take part in the Olympic Way project of the Belarus President’s Sports Club which aims to help sport schools, teams, and athletes, BelTA learned from the President’s Sports Club.

Belarusian athletes who will become champions or medalists of the European Games, break personal records or show career best result will be given an opportunity to choose a sport school which will then receive funding from the President’s Sports Club.

The President’s Sports Club is running such a campaign for the fifth time. The predecessor of the Olympic Way was the Olympic Choice project which had been launched ahead of the 2012 London Summer Olympics and was in effect during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, and the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. In line with the project, the club has already assigned around $240,000 to various sport schools.

The Olympic Choice project has transformed into the Olympic Way project. However, the main terms have remained unchanged: the project takes into account achievements of Belarusian athletes and allocates funding to sport schools in Belarus. Only some terms of the project will be changed during the 2nd European Games. The President’s Sports Club will let athletes choose a school and will then earmark Br15,000, Br10,000, or Br7,500 for the first, second, and third places respectively.

The organizers of the project hope that achievements of Belarusian athletes in the 2nd European Games in Minsk will motivate them and help perform even better at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The President’s Sports Club is implementing the project with support of the Belarusian National Olympic Committee, the Belarusian Sports and Tourism Ministry, and the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee.
