Brest Oblast to delegate 23 athletes to 2nd European Games in Minsk

BREST, 3 June (BelTA) – Brest Oblast will be represented by 23 athletes at the 2nd European Games in Minsk. This information was voiced at a press conference in the Brest regional sports promotion center on 3 June, BelTA has learned.

These athletes will compete in nine sports, namely acrobatic gymnastics, badminton, 3x3 basketball, cycling, canoe sprint, karate, athletics, rifle and pistol shooting and beach soccer.

“I hope that the athletes from Brest Oblast will be a valuable asset in Belarus’ team and will perform to the best of their ability. All organizational and technical issues have been settled. The athletes received everything they needed to get ready for the European Games. The only thing they need to do now is to produce a good result,” Brest Oblast Deputy Governor Gennady Borisyuk said.

Both experienced and fledgling athletes earned the right to be part of Team Belarus. Among them are Alena Amialiusik (road cycling), Aleh Yurenia (canoe sprint), Tatsiana Khaladovich (athletics), and Elvira Herman (athletics).

The Brest Oblast delegation also features Yury Shcherbatsevich (rifle and pistol shooting).  He is a many-time European champion, world prizewinner. He has competed in three Olympic Games and the 1st European Games in Baku. “We will compete for the licenses at the European Games. Getting into the Olympics is the number one priority. Competing in front of home crowd is different for every athlete. Someone does better at home, others may melt down. I hope this will not be a hindrance for me,” the athlete said.

The vice governor said that Brest Oblast has already become part of the European Games as it was the first to welcome the Flame of Peace torch relay According to him, hotels and roadside service facilities are fully prepared and are looking forward to welcoming guests. Local travel companies have already developed more than 40 tours with visits to the sports facilities. During the games Brest Oblast is planning to hold over 20 events: folk and dance festivals, sports events.
