MINSK, 30 April (BelTA) – An alley to mark the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Minsk Tsentralny District was planted on the premises of the Belarusian State Physical Culture University on 30 April, BelTA has learned.

Taking part in the event were Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk, CEO of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC) George Katulin, Rector of the Belarusian State Physical Culture University Sergei Repkin, Head of the Tsentralny District Administration Dmitry Petrusha, renowned athletes, including cyclist Vladimir Kaminsky, winner of the team time trial at the 21st Olympic Games, and students of the university.

Sergei Repkin pointed out that the event will leave a memory of the upcoming European Games in Minsk. Sports representatives planted the trees together with the students who will tend to the alley.

MEGOC CEO George Katulin noted that he graduated from the Belarusian State Physical Culture University 30 years ago which is why it was a great pleasure for him to take part in the tree planting event. “This is an important event ahead of the European Games. We talk a lot about sport in the context of the games, but we also put a lot of effort into developing the city infrastructure and creating a more favorable environment in Minsk. The new alley will undoubtedly brighten up this part of the city. We have chosen this place for a reason, as the university is the alma mater of a lot of athletes, and I believe that the 2nd European Games will encourage students to aim for the best sport results,” George Katulin said.

Some hundred trees with nameplates have been planted near the university stadium.

Minsk will host the 2nd European Games on 21-30 June. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete for 200 medal sets in 15 sports eight of which will act as qualifiers for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
