2nd European Games Minsk 2019 expected to attract about 30,000 foreign tourists

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – Belarus looks forward to welcoming about 30,000 foreign tourists during the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Sports and Tourism Minister Mikhail Portnoi on 27 March.

“We took the 1st European Games as the baseline. Those games attracted about 28,000 tourists. We intend to do better than that. We intend to welcome at least 30,000 tourists,” the official said.

A republican organizing committee led by the prime minister has been set up to ensure the games are properly organized. It includes a subcommittee on interaction with foreign tourists. An official tourist operator and an agent of the games have been selected via tenders. The National Tourism Agency has certified 886 guides and 200 escorting interpreters for the games. Any kinds of tours are available for any kind of audience. Infrastructure is being prepared to give the people, who come here, a quality tourism product, the official said.

“In Europe major events usually inflate hotel prices by two or three times. We’ve decided to limit price growth. During the European Games we will also invigorate domestic tourism. We are confident the event will proceed flawlessly,” Mikhail Portnoi stressed.

The 2nd European Games will take place in Minsk on 21-30 June 2019. Over 4,000 athletes from 50 countries will compete in 199 medal events in 15 sports. Competitions in eight sports will be qualifiers for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
