Belarus Nature Week kicks off on 22 May

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Belarus Nature Week will be held on 22-29 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB).

The week will celebrate the Year of Native Land and the International Day of Biological Diversity (22 May). A number of events will be held by the Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources, the Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany, the Central Botanical Garden, and the Institute of Forest. The opening seminar on 22 May will be timed to the International Day of Biological Diversity and will bring together the country’s leading scientists working for the NASB. Thursday, 23 May, will be dedicated to botany and zoology. The 9th international research and educational seminar on forestry will also take place on 23 May.

On 24 May, the Central Botanical Garden will arrange excursions to show Belarus’ wild and ornamental flora represented in its expositions. On 25-26 May, the Central Botanical Garden will host the TOYDAY family game festival from 10:00 to 18:00. Visitors will be able to see rare and endangered plants and buy them in the shop of the Central Botanical Garden.

On 28 May, school students in Minsk and Gomel will join the campaign to landscape school grounds.

During the week leading NASB scientists will make media appearances and give public lectures, take part in presentations and other events. 

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 22 May the International Day of Biological Diversity in 1995 to raise awareness about preservation of ecosystems and extinction of plant and animal species.
