World Bank’s contribution to Belarus’ social, economic development noted

MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) – The contribution of the World Bank to the social and economic development of Belarus is considerable. Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich made the relevant statement as he met with Cyril Muller, the World Bank’s Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, on 1 June, BelTA has learned.

The head of the upper chamber of the Belarus parliament also thanked the World Bank for the constructive attitude in interaction with Belarus. In his words, at present the portfolio of joint projects is estimated at roughly $1 billion and support in the form of grants comes in handy. Mikhail Myasnikovich reminded that it was he who signed the documents on Belarus’ joining the World Bank Group in 1992. “I keep an eye on the situation and see that we gain new projects all the time,” he remarked.

Mikhail Myasnikovich mentioned that the World Bank plays an important role in Belarus’ dialogue with the International Monetary Fund. “We would be very grateful if you back the Belarusian position in this dialogue,” he said.

Among the promising projects that Belarus-World Bank cooperation could focus on in the near future Mikhail Myasnikovich mentioned investments in building the second runway in the Minsk National Airport as well as additional regional projects in the sphere of housing and utility services and town development.

Speaking about a new Belarus-World Bank partnership strategy, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly said he believes the strategy should be balanced taking into account interests of the sides and should stem from the positive results achieved in the course of implementing the current strategy that will end in 2017.
