Speaker: Belarusian economy able to operate in difficult, sometimes unpredictable conditions

MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) - The Belarusian economy is able to operate in difficult, sometimes unpredictable conditions, Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko said at the meeting of the fourth session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the 7th convocation, BelTA has learned.

“Of course, the situation is not easy but is under control. Since June, GDP has been gradually recovering, and in January-October amounted to 98.9% of the GDP in the corresponding period of the previous year. Foreign trade remains balanced with the surplus at $1.5 billion. The government has managed not only to stabilize the foreign exchange market but also to increase real wages. And most importantly, enterprises continue to operate steadily. All this proves the ability of the domestic economy to work in difficult, sometimes unpredictable conditions,” Vladimir Andreichenko said. "Our strategy has  proved right. We saw that the economies with advanced industry have declined economically much less amid the pandemic than those with prevailing services sector."

The Speaker noted that all external and internal factors that have affected the country's development this year should be carefully taken into account as the country develops the economic strategy for the future. “First of all, we should look at the draft national budget and the program of the government from this angle. Certain conclusions have already been drawn by the standing commissions. We need to clearly articulate a common position by the next meeting,” he stressed.

As for other issues on the agenda, Vladimir Andreichenko asked the MPs to pay special attention to the bills which are much expected by the business community and which are designed to stabilize the social and economic situation. “First of all, these are the draft laws on the activities of business entities and enforcement proceedings. Here we still need to address some issues. Our task is to complete this work as soon as possible. In the near future, we need to finish updating the legislation on administrative responsibility. There is another very serious task, namely the instruction given by the head of state to the government and parliament to work out a solution to the so-called road tax. The MPs should get actively involved in this work,” Vladimir Andreichenko noted.
