Skidel, Lazdijai to build sports facilities together

GRODNO, 19 July (BelTA) – Plans have been made to include a joint project to build and renovate sports facilities to the tune of about €1.5 million in the program of international technical aid by Belarusian Skidel and Lithuanian Lazdijai. The statement was made during the visit of the Lazdijai administration to Grodno District on 19 July, BelTA has learned.

The project, with which the sides are planning to take part in the program of transboundary cooperation of Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus sponsored by the European Union, was one of the main issues on the agenda of the meeting between the Lithuanian delegation and Grodno District authorities. “The project envisages the renovation of a stadium in Skidel, laying of a modern coating there, installation of new sports equipment. Plans have been also made to build an amphitheater there. The facility will have about 1,000 seats,” Deputy Chairman of the Grodno District Executive Committee Valery Klimovich explained.

It is planned to renovate a sports complex in Lazdijai. “We are now harmonizing the details. We are going to file an application in September,” Lazdijai Mayor Arturas Margelis said. He noted that the sides have already accumulated joint experience in the implementation of transboundary projects. They have modernized a number of schools in both countries.

An agreement on cooperation between the Lazdijai administration and Grodno District was signed in march 2014. The sides have maintained regular contact since then. The regions productively cooperate in culture and sport. Lithuanian cyclists took part in the cycling marathon Susedzi (Neighbors). Lithuanian art groups have been permanent guests at the festival Augustow Canal in the Culture of the Three Nations.
