Second runway at Minsk Airport to double passenger traffic

Second runway at Minsk Airport to double passenger traffic

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – The commissioning of the second runway in Minsk National Airport will help double passenger traffic, Belarus’ Transport and Communications Minister Aleksei Avramenko informed BelTA.

BelTA reported earlier that the commissioning of the runway was scheduled for late April or early May. “The airport decided to construct a second runway because the service life of the first one is coming to an end. It is in need of repairs and now operates only for several types of aircraft,” the minister said. “The commissioning of the new runway will let the airport renovate the other one and admit higher class aircraft. These measures will give an impetus to the development of Minsk National Airport. Its main goal is to become a significant international hub and transport more people and freight,” Aleksei Avramenko added.

The transport minister also commented on the possibility of increasing the passenger traffic. “In the last three or four years, the passenger traffic of the airport has risen by actually 2.8 times and is close to five million passengers a year. Such dynamics allows me to believe that we should aim for ten million passengers a year,” he said.

Minsk National Airport is Belarus' first international airport that has been certified for compliance with the international standard ISO 9001. The airport offers flights to over 40 destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and other regions.
