MINSK, 29 December (BelTA) - The Port of Klaipeda is prepared to resume transshipment of Belarusian fertilizers, Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority said, Lithuanian media report.
He stated that if politicians decide to do so, the port is ready to transit Belaruskali fertilizers. “These are the decisions of major states. The port itself is ready for cargo handling because it is designed not only for transshipment but it also has to compete for it. There is immense competition in the region,” he said.
Algis Latakas acknowledged that the port is suffering significant losses due to the sanctions on Belarusian fertilizers. Before the sanctions, the Port of Klaipeda handled 48 million tonnes of cargo annually, with a quarter of that being Belaruskali fertilizers. In 2023, the port handling dropped to 32 million tonnes. According to him, due to the sanctions, the port has lost not only fertilizers but also other cargoes. Railway and shipping companies are also incurring financial losses.
On 13 December the U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus John Coale stated that the United States was lifting sanctions on Belarusian potash.
