MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – According to a report from the PAP news agency, the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration wants to reopen two vehicle border crossings with Belarus (Bobrowniki-Berestovitsa and Kuznica Bialostocka-Bruzgi) on 17 November. The respective draft law was published on the Polish Government Legislation Center’s website.

“The proposed measures are aimed at resuming the flow of people and goods, which is a response to the expectations of society, in particular a large group of entrepreneurs and carriers,” the bill’s justification reads.

According to the bill, the Bobrowniki-Berestovitsa border crossing is planned to reopen for passenger traffic, including buses. It will also handle – with some restrictions – freight traffic. The crossing will be accessible to vehicles registered in member states of the European Union, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, and Switzerland.

The second crossing, Kuznica Bialostocka-Bruzgi, will be open to passenger traffic, excluding buses.

Currently, the Terespol-Brest crossing is open to cars, and the Kukuryki-Kozlovichi crossing is open to trucks. Several rail freight crossings are also operational.

Earlier, on 28 October, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced his readiness to reopen two border crossings with Belarus in November. He stated that the reopening of the crossings in Bobrowniki and Kuznica would take place “on a trial basis” after consultations with Vilnius. However, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė announced on 30 October that the reopening was being postponed, an agreement reached following her talks with Donald Tusk. Polish Government Spokesman Adam Szłapka later clarified that the border crossings were still planned to reopen “around mid-November.” Polish business representatives have repeatedly emphasized that reopening the border crossings with Belarus in Podlaskie Voivodeship is crucial for the economy of eastern Poland.

According to Polish media, Podlaskie Voivodeship is currently undergoing intensive preparatory work aimed at the fast opening of the border crossings in Bobrowniki and Kuznica, coordinated by Voivode of Podlaskie Voivodeship Jacek Brzozowski.

The Kuznica border crossing was closed in November 2021, and the Bobrowniki checkpoint was closed in February 2023.
