PM: Armenian business is welcome in Belarus
MINSK, 22 December (BelTA) – The Belarusian government is interested in Armenian business coming to the country, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said as he met with outgoing Armenia’s Ambassador to Belarus Armen Ghevondyan on 22 December, BelTA has learned.
“We are determined to work actively in the Armenian market. Of course, we are interested in welcoming Armenian business in Belarus with its high-quality, inexpensive and environmentally friendly food products. You boast a large assortment of fruit and vegetables and we know that Armenian business is very active and we are interested in it coming here,” said Roman Golovchenko.
According to him, trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and Armenia has been developing very fruitfully and constructively. The prime minister also hopes it will become even more vibrant. “Good figures in trade are probably the main indicator of how active the officials and businessmen of the two countries are. Of course, we expect this trend to continue next year,” the prime minister stressed.
The Belarusian head of government praised cooperation with Armenia in the Eurasian Economic Union. “I am glad that our positions coincide with the Armenian side in the discussions are held on the EAEU platform. This union probably serves as a cementing factor for the development of trade and economic relations not only on a bilateral basis. We create common rules of the game, and we are gradually getting used to them. We learn to look for compromises within the framework of this union, to find common solutions that ultimately help strengthen the economies of all the EAEU countries,” he added.
Roman Golovchenko expressed hope that during the future work of Armen Ghevondyan in the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs the issues of the Belarusian-Armenian cooperation will remain in the focus of his attention.
Armen Ghevondyan confirmed that Belarusian-Armenian relations have great potential. “This is not just a diplomatic term and assessment. This is what I have experienced during two years of my work here,” said the ambassador.
He stressed that amid the pandemic and the suspension of trade and economic contacts in the world, Belarus and Armenia have increased mutual trade by almost 20% in January-October 2020. “It shows that there are niches of cooperation that should be developed,” the ambassador said.
In January-October 2020 the trade between Belarus and Armenia increased by 19.8% to $67.5 million compared to the same period last year. Exports amounted to $49.2 million (up 16%), imports - $18.3 million (up 31.4%). The main Belarusian exports were milk and cream, condensed and dried milk, cheese and curd, tractors and truck tractors, beef, wires, cables, and medications. Spirits, styrene polymers, copper waste and scrap made up Belarus’ imports from Armenia.
