Mogilev meat and dairy producers seek to tap into Japanese market

MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) – Mogilev companies are planning to branch out into the Japanese meat and dairy market. Relevant contracts may be concluded at the first Belarusian-Japanese economic forum which is due to take place in Japan on 9-11 May, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Japan Ruslan Yesin told BelTA.

“The forthcoming forum will include meetings between Mogilev meat and dairy producers and Japanese enterprises to discuss possible delivery agreements. Thus, citizens of and visitors to Japan will have a chance to appreciate the high quality of Belarusian products. A Belarusian cuisine restaurant in Tokyo may become the first consumer of Belarusian food products in Japan,” the ambassador said.

According to Ruslan Yesin, due to its geographic location Japan secures only 39% of its food needs. The country imports large amounts of meat products (including beef, pork and poultry), butter and skimmed milk powder. The main suppliers are the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Thailand and New Zealand.

“Belarus is exploring the Japanese food market. We are working with the relevant ministries, business associations and leading Japanese importers of meat and dairy products in order to create the opportunities for the market entry,” the diplomat said.
