Miory to build medical center using German investments, technology

MIORY, 3 August (BelTA) – Plans are in place to build an inter-district medical center using German investment and technology in the town of Miory. The project was discussed during a visit of Belarus President of Alexander Lukashenko to Miory Central District Hospital, BelTA has learned.

In the medical center Alexander Lukashenko met with Belarusian businessman Aleksei Kovalenok. Thanks to him the city has launched a project to build Miory Rolling Mill, a unique industrial facility with the use of German investment and German technologies.

The businessman suggested another object but this time in the social sector, a high-tech cardiology center in compliance with German standards. It will provide emergency and scheduled specialized care to people living in the nearby districts and export health services to foreign nationals.

It is expected that the medical center will operate on the principles of public-private partnership. The project is of particular relevance in connection with the launch of the new mill which will attract additional labor to Miory in coming years.

“We ask nothing from the budget for the project. Everything will be built and managed by the foreign partner. There are no such projects either in Belarus, or Russia, or Kazakhstan,” said Aleksei Kovalenok.

Alexander Lukashenko said he studied the project. “We will pay for the people who cannot afford treatment at your center,” said the president. He stressed, however, that the prices should be reasonable. “If we see that the project is used to milk big money (I do not think this is the case, though), we will refuse from its services because we have places to treat people,” he noted.

If the decision on the construction of the center is approved, the German company KBV GmbH & Co. KG, with more than 40 years of experience in the healthcare sector, will act as developer and equipment supplier. The investment is expected to reach €77 million.

During the visit to Miory Central District Hospital, the head of state was shown an X-ray room, maternity and children’s departments. He talked to young mothers and gave them gifts.

Healthcare Minister Valery Malashko briefed the president on the development of the healthcare system in the country in general. “This year we, together with the regional authorities have worked out a social standard for introducing the institute of the general practitioner, which showed good results in rural areas. Today we are introducing these practices at the regional level,” the minister said.

Alexander Lukashenko also emphasized the need to provide assistance to the elderly, especially those living alone.

A new 80-bed building of Miory Central District Hospital was commissioned in May 2018. The facility incorporates reception, surgery, pediatric, obstetric, physiotherapeutic, anesthesiology and intensive care departments, operative-dressing and diagnostic rooms.

Fitted with modern equipment the hospital provides multi-type medical care, introduces new examination and treatment methods, and expands the range of surgical procedures.
