Makei: Belarus ready to assign German business special role in modernization plans

MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) - Belarus is ready to assign German business a special role in the modernization plans, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the meeting of the non-governmental Belarus-German Business Cooperation Council on 1 June, BelTA has learned.

“We are ready to assign German business a special role in our plans to modernize and restructure the economy. We are happy to see German business, which is lagging behind other EU countries in terms of the development of the Belarusian market, taking the leading position among foreign investors. We understand that there are certain steps that the Belarusian government is expected to take. I am convinced that in the future we will reach a mutual understanding on the form, speed and format of such steps,” Vladimir Makei said.

According to Vladimir Makei, Belarus would like to see German investors primarily in those industries in which they are recognized leaders: automotive, chemical and petrochemical industries, energy, including renewable energy, high technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutics, electronics.

“There are great opportunities for cooperation in such fields as transport and logistics, production and processing of agricultural products. We are interested to see a cluster of German hi-tech enterprises in the Chinese-Belarusian industrial park. I am sure that it would in the interests of both parties to establish cooperation in terms of supplies of Belarusian spare parts to German companies,” the minister said.
