Lukashenko unveils Belarus’ export strategy

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Belarus’ top export policy priorities are to penetrate new foreign markets and to enhance its positions on traditional ones, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the 5th Belarusian People’s Congress on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus’ foreign economic strategy will be aimed at establishing mutually beneficial ties in the east, west, and south. First of all, we need to use all the advantages of integration projects on the post-Soviet space which had been initiated by an active participant of these projects – Belarus. These are the Union State, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States,” the head of state said.

“In spite of all the objective difficulties connected with the situation on these markets, we should understand that foreign investors are interested in Belarus because our country has free access to these markets uniting 250 million people. Therefore, we cannot leave the Eurasian region and lose these advantages in work with our neighbors and allies. Belarus needs to use available tools to enhance its positions there,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

According to the President, the development of export is one of the priorities as this factor has a strong influence on the country’s wellbeing. “Such aspects as the diversification of export and penetration of new markets of goods and services come to the forefront today,” the Belarusian leader stressed. “Our main priorities are to branch out into new external markets and to enhance positions on traditional ones.”

The President remarked that the first year of the Eurasian Economic Union was not easy. However, the agencies of the union have done a lot during Belarus’ presidency. According to the head of state, there is tangible progress in the industrial policy harmonization, liberalization of the transport services market, export promotion, formation of the common market of medications and medical devices. We have laid the foundations for the formation of the common oil and gas market. “Of curse, the union still needs to do a lot to lift all barriers. In 2016-2020, we should ensure the practical implementation of agreements, and make considerable progress in the elimination of existing exemptions and restrictions in mutual trade,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

“Having evaluated the potential of traditional markets, we make a conclusion that Belarus should step up efforts to promote its goods and services in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Africa,” the President added. “The most difficult, yet essential, thing is to refocus Belarus’ export from neighboring markets to the markets of Asian, American, and African countries. We expect that the export to distant arc countries will soar by 52% from the current level.”
