MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – Science should reach brand new heights and become a genuine driver of the country’s development. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during the government conference held on 21 November to discuss the development of the scientific sphere and the operation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, BelTA has learned.
The president reminded that a meeting with the working group in charge of analyzing the operation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus took place in August 2025: “A study of its conclusions and proposals demonstrates that there are obvious shortcomings and imbalances in the operation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the entire scientific sphere. We have talked about it today. Maybe even excessively. But there is also serious potential.”
The head of state noted that in several weeks the Belarusian People’s Congress would have to approve the program on the country’s social and economic development for the next five years. Aleksandr Lukashenko called the program a document of utmost importance. “The document, in which science should manifest itself on a brand new level. It should become a genuine driver of the country’s development,” he stressed.
The president is convinced that the competitive ability of the economy and the reinforcement of Belarus’ sovereignty depend on the effective realization of the scientific potential. “Our science has accomplishments. Primarily in the fields of materials science, information technologies, healthcare, agriculture, biotechnologies, space research, and some other fields,” Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out.
“You know my respectful attitude to people of science. This is why we are gathered today. But I think we should organize a congress of scientists where only scientists will speak. And it will be a very serious event. I think next year. You will step up efforts, think about the matters you and I have raised today, think them through, and we will hold this congress,” the head of state added.
