Lukashenko: Decision to develop the flax industry was right

KORELICHI DISTRICT, 20 September (BelTA) – The decision to develop the flax industry in the country was right, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he talked to the personnel of OAO Korelichi Len on 20 September, BelTA informs.

“I used to think that the decision to save the flax industry could be a risky one because of the market demand for linen products. I was concerned because we had invested a lot of money in the project. But today we are convinced that the decision was right. Flax growing is important for Belarus,” the head of state emphasized.

In his words, the country has always produced enough flax. The output was bigger than it is now. “Orsha Linen Mill needs 50,000-52,000 tonnes of flax fibers. We will produce this amount of high-quality flax this year. We must keep up to this level in the future,” the president said.

“Flax is a political plant. It can be seen on the country’s national emblem for a reason. Therefore, we cannot ruin this industry. Today we can step up efforts to intensify the process of flax growing and processing without increasing areas under flax,” the president said. “Our goal is to determine priorities and to complete the modernization of flax processing facilities this year to help you work and develop on your own.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko criticized specialists for the small export of linen fabrics. Not many countries produce linen fabrics. These are France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Russia. “Linen fabrics are not produced in the south. Even if they make them, they purchase our raw materials. Irrational approaches to such matters were used here in the past. We should process flax and make good fabrics in Belarus,” he stressed.

Excellent gift sets from linen are made, for example, at Orsha Linen Mill. The president often presents these sets to high-ranking foreign guests. “They are excited and ask where to buy such things. It means that we don’t know how to sell our products. It is essential to learn,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
