Lukashenko approves changes in road passenger transportation

MINSK, 16 August (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko approved the approaches suggested by the Transport and Communications Ministry to reform the road passenger transportation sector, Transport and Communications Minister Aleksei Avramenko told the media after a meeting with the head of state on 16 August, BelTA has learned.

The Transport and Communications Ministry has drawn up an appropriate draft decree. According to Aleksei Avramenko, "the president generally approved the proposed approaches.”

In particular, the document suggests introducing registration cards for transport vehicles, a clearance card of a driver, a dispatcher of non-schedule road passenger transportation and a taxi dispatcher. These measures will streamline this sector, according to the ministry.

"We are actually following in the footsteps of the Russian Federation. They apply similar approaches to taxi service operation. Today, the market is not fully regulated in terms of vehicles, operating companies. We are seeking to go digital, to compile an electronic database of drivers, vehicles," the minister said.

The primary goal is to ensure the safety of transportation, Aleksei Avramenko stressed. "This is an unlicensed type of activity. If a driver wants to work, he/she must have a registration card which will keep the information on violations, vehicle inspections, and vehicle conformity. Thus, inexperienced drivers will not be given permission to provide transportation services,” he added.
