MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) - Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budris has suggested that two border checkpoints with Belarus might be reopened by 30 November, Lithuanian media report.
“I think it is worth considering,” he told journalists when asked whether the border checkpoints with Belarus could be reopened before 30 November.
On 29 October, the Lithuanian government closed the border checkpoints on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border until 30 November. Traffic through the Šalčininkai (Benyakoni on the Belarusian side) checkpoint was completely holted, while only certain categories of individuals such as diplomats, diplomatic couriers, and persons transiting to or from Kaliningrad are permitted to cross the border via the Medininkai checkpoint (Kamenny Log on the Belarusian side). Additionally, citizens of Lithuania, other EU countries, and foreigners with temporary residence permits in Lithuania and humanitarian visas may return to Lithuania via the Medininkai checkpoint. In exceptional cases, other individuals may cross the border with the mediation of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
