IRU interested in transport, logistics projects in Belarus

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – The International Road Transport Union (IRU) is interested in implementing transport and logistics projects in Belarus, representatives of the Belarusian Economy Ministry told BelTA.

According to the source, Belarusian Deputy Economy Minister Dmitry Krutoi and Deputy Economy Minister Alexander Yaroshenko met with a delegation of the International Road Transport Union led by the IRU’s Secretary General Umberto de Pretto on 6 October. During the meeting the sides confirmed their interest in advancing vigorous cooperation for the sake of jointly implementing projects in Belarus in the area of transport and logistics.

BelTA has been told that the meeting also touched upon prospects of using Belarus’ transit potential within the framework of the Silk Road Economic Belt concept. The IRU believes that the concept’s implementation will give a unique opportunity for developing ground transport, trade, and the landlocked economies, which are located along the international transit corridor from Europe to China.

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) was founded in Geneva in 1948. It operates in over 100 countries representing interests of passenger and freight automobile transport operators, taxi service operators at the national, regional and international levels. The IRU is intent on facilitating sustainable development of automobile transport, including by means of introducing innovations and professional training of the personnel.

The UN has authorized the IRU to administrate the global freight transportation system, which facilitates cargo clearance during border crossing procedures.
