Higher efficiency and competitiveness named top priorities for Belarus’ agribusiness

MINSK, 30 November (BelTA) – The main goal of agribusiness development is to increase its efficiency and competitiveness, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Mikhail Rusy noted at the joint session of the Belarusian parliament on 30 November, BelTA has learned.

“The main task of further agribusiness development is to boost its efficiency and competitiveness. Serious violations of technological discipline and sometimes acts of mismanagement still take place in Belarus’ agriculture. This is why the dictatorship of technology is our number one goal,” the deputy prime minister said.

He stressed that the country invests certain funds in agribusiness every year, and it is simply unacceptable to use them in an unreasonable or ineffective way.

According to Mikhail Rusy, the current cropping pattern has brought positive results in animal farming and stepped up livestock production. “This is not enough, however, to reach the goal to increase the efficiency of agricultural production. Corn, the most expensive component, still accounts for a significant share in forage production. Sometimes, however, forage fails to meet the physiological needs of animals,” the official remarked. As a result, agricultural manufacturers suffer losses due to cattle diseases and the decreasing productive lifetime.

Violations of technological regulations on milk production, poor performance of cattle management software specialists, and lack of technical maintenance of equipment in a number of agricultural organizations do not let them use the tried-and-tested technologies and their capacities, Mikhail Rusy stated.

“The Agricultural and Food Ministry and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus have developed the methods to solve the mentioned problems. They just should be put into practice at the local level by everyone, from regular specialists to heads of companies,” Mikhail Rusy summarized.
