GRODNO, 4 April (BelTA) – Grodno Oblast is interested in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan. Grodno Oblast Governor Vladimir Karanik made the statement after meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Belarus Ulvi Bakhshaliyev, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Karanik said: “It is a very good meeting from the point of view of prospects of advancing cooperation between Belarus and Azerbaijan. 2021 has already demonstrated good dynamics of mutual relations between Grodno Oblast and Azerbaijan enterprises. Export to Azerbaijan rose by 200% but there is interest in buying our agricultural machines, woodworking and food industry products. A rather broad choice of products and mutual shipments.”

In 2021 Grodno Oblast’s merchandise trade with Azerbaijan totaled $17.5 million, with export at $17.4 million and import at $0.1 million. About 40 enterprises exported their products to Azerbaijan.

Ulvi Bakhshaliyev said: “We have plenty of promising avenues for cooperation such as agriculture and machine building. We will double our efforts to advance mutual relations. Belarus-Azerbaijan trade is on the rise. It reached $885 million in 2021, twice as much as in 2020. We are going to work on raising the bar even higher.”

During the meeting Vladimir Karanik noted that the two sides have very many contact points. “I am happy that Azerbaijan is interested in deepening cooperation. I hope that such meetings will spur our real sectors of economy to step up contacts at the local level. Practice demonstrates that due to the mentality of our nations they can find a lot of opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation if we enable the conditions for it. And then our mutual relations have always demonstrated benevolence. It historically happened largely thanks to friendly relations between heads of our countries,” he added.

The sides also see prospects of advancing relations in tourism, humanitarian affairs, education, and in preserving the historical legacy.
