Europe-China rail freight traffic via Belarus up 1.6 times in January-September

Europe-China rail freight traffic via Belarus up 1.6 times in January-September

MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – In January-September 2020 more than 380,000 containers in twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) were transported en route China-Europe-China via the Belarusian rail, which is 1.6 times up from the same period last year, BelTA learned from the press center of Belarusian Railways.

The Belarusian Railways provides unimpeded access and timely terminal processing of combined long-distance trains. The bulk of container trains going East-West-East pass through the border crossing Brest/Terespol. The container terminal of the Brest-Severny station provides services to the business community for storage, consolidation of containers and timely terminal processing,” representatives of the Belarusian Railways said.

The Belarusian Railways has recently provided access to a train of 123 containers of consumer goods from China to Europe. The delivery was organized by the United Transport and Logistics Company – Eurasian Rail Alliance (UTLC ERA) with the participation of the Kazakhstan Railways, Volga Railways, South-Eastern Railways and Moscow Railways (branches of the Russian Railways), and the Belarusian Railways. The train traveled through the Russian Railways and the Belarusian Railways with the speed of more than 1000 km/day. Travel time on the Belarusian territory before arrival in Brest made up 16 hours.

“The use of combined long container trains (with more than 100 conventional units) helps reduce operating costs (through the use of one locomotive instead of two), reduce the load on the infrastructure and increase the capacity of sections on the freight-loaded directions,” the Belarusian Railways said.

Taking into account the continuing growth of container traffic, the Belarusian Railways, together with the participants of the transport services market, has been developing new routes through the Belarusian-Polish border crossings Bruzgi/Kuznica Bialostocka and Svisloch/Siemianowka. In October, the Belarusian Railways provided access for container trains to the Belarusian-Polish border crossings Bruzgi/Kuznica Bialostocka in the China-Europe-China communication.
