Draft roadmap of Belarus-Pakistan relations may be approved in October

MINSK, 11 August (BelTA) – It is planned to approve the draft roadmap of Belarus-Pakistan relations development in October 2015. The statement was made at the meeting of Belarus Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Minsk on 11 August, BelTA has learned.

It was reported earlier that the decision to work out a roadmap of short-term and long-term cooperation development was made not long ago. “I suggest that the co-chairs of the joint commission will be in charge of the preparation of the roadmap. If you are not against, we would like them to determine concrete avenues of cooperation between the partners from both sides and to submit the harmonized document to the governments of the two countries in October 2015,” Andrei Kobyakov said. Nawaz Sharif supported his idea.

The Belarusian premier noted that the proposed schedule is very intensive as the sides still have a lot to do. However, taking into account the foundations which were laid after the visit of the Belarusian President to Pakistan, there is not doubt that there is enough time to prepare a balanced and comprehensive document.” Andrei Kobyakov believes.

At the meeting held on 11 August the sides discussed cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry, oil and gas extraction, air transportation. Apart from that, Andrei Kobyakov reminded that during Alexander Lukashenko’s visit to Pakistan in May the sides created conditions for the comprehensive development of bilateral cooperation in the manufacturing sector and agriculture. He said that Belarus and Pakistan can step up efforts to reconcile positions in these fields. The sessions of working groups for the manufacturing industry and agriculture can be an efficient negotiations platform.

The sides also discussed the possibility to create the Minsk-Beijing-Islamabad triangle within the Pakistani-Chinese economic corridor. Andrei Kobyakov noted that Belarus has enough experience of participation in large-scale infrastructure projects (in Venezuela and Turkmenistan). Therefore, it is possible to set up a special taskforce in the Belarus-Pakistan commission to study the prospects of Belarus’ participation in the Pakistani-Chinese economic corridor project.

Nawaz Sharif, in turn, thanked the Belarusian side for a warm welcome and shared his impressions of the visit to Belarus. He noted with satisfaction that thanks to the initiative of the Belarusian head of state the sides have made huge progress in the enhancement of bilateral interaction in the past three months.
