Contracts worth $250m signed during Sudan president’s visit to Belarus

MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) - Belarus and Sudan signed the contracts worth $250 million during the official visit of Sudan President Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir to Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Sudan (concurrent accreditation) Sergei Rachkov told the media ahead of the Belarusian-Sudanese Business Forum, BelTA has learned.

“During these days (yesterday and today) we signed 17 documents. It is not only agreements and treaties but also contracts with specific numbers. The total sum is $250 million. This has been a successful visit, successful negotiations,” the diplomat said.

According to Sergei Rachkov, bilateral cooperation holds great promise. There are certain projects, in particular, to attract companies with the Sudanese capital to Belarus (banking sector, real estate). “We have great hopes for Amkodor. A contract to supply 123 vehicles to Sudan is in the pipeline,” the Ambassador added. This is not only about supplying of equipment but also about training of personnel for Sudan. Nobody cares about sale markets only. It is important to develop economic cooperation, Sergei Rachkov underlined.

For his part, the head of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vladimir Ulakhovich noted that cooperation between the two countries is developing quite dynamically. The tow countries have recently taken steps to unlock new opportunities. Vladimir Ulakhovich also suggested considering subregional cooperation. “If we set up an engineering center, we should aim for other nearby markets too,” he said.

Talking about the promising areas of bilateral cooperation, Vladimir Ulakhovich stressed that this list is quite extensive. This includes interaction in agriculture, development of mineral resources, infrastructure development, logistics and many more. The business forum in Minsk has brought together representatives of about 40 Belarusian companies and nine Sudanese companies who are authorized to represent entire industries of the country.
