Brest, Penza to develop cooperation in cattle breeding

BREST, 3 December (BelTA) – Cooperation in cattle breeding between Brest Oblast and Penza Oblast was high on the agenda of the meeting held in the Brest Oblast Executive Committee on 3 December, BelTA has learned.

The talks were led by Deputy Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Mikhail Serkov and Acting Deputy Chairman of the Government and Agriculture Minister of Penza Oblast Andrei Burlakov. The goal of his visit was primarily to study the experience of Brest Oblast in cattle breeding. "We view this experience as very positive and would like to adopt some technological solutions and to organize closer mutually beneficial economic cooperation in this regard," said Andrei Burlakov.

In recent years, the Russian region began to pay close attention to dairy production: two large cattle-breeding farms have been built. Four more are at the stage of design. The Russian region is planning to build a number of small (up to 1,000 head) farms. Penza Oblast produces annually about 330,000 tonnes of milk and imports almost 60,000 tonnes from neighboring territories. The region lacks raw milk to increase its processing.

"Goods made in Belarus are more competitive: they are of good quality and reasonably priced. We have not reached this yet. We have some successes in poultry and pig breeding. In terms of dairy cattle breeding we need to gain some more experience. We would like to invite Belarusian specialists to build dairy farms, supply breeding stock, create and develop a joint pedigree breeding center in Penza Oblast. It is important for us to address these issues,” he noted.

This year Brest Oblast plans to produce 1.5 million tonnes of milk. According to deputy chairman of the agriculture and food committee of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Sergei Boutkevich, the region can supply around 10,000 young cows of European quality to the Russian region. "We could assist Penza Oblast and participate in turn-key construction projects: starting from design and construction of dairy farms to supplying highly productive cattle to dairy farms and bringing them to the designed capacity," said Sergei Boutkevich.

On 3 December Andrei Burlakov is set to visit the dairy farms in Brest, Kamenets and Pruzhany districts. He already visited Gomel Oblast where he went to see Gomselmash. According to him, the Belarusian agricultural machinery has a big share on the Russian market. "We believe that there are also good prospects for cooperation. Agreement was reached with Gomselmash to start assembling some trailed mounted machines in Penza Oblast,” Andrei Burlakov said.
