BREST, 10 December (BelTA) - Brest Oblast offers Chinese partners a project to launch hoisting-transport equipment production, Brest Oblast Governor Piotr Parkhomchik said as he met with the leadership of China’s Anhui Province, BelTA learned from the Brest Oblast Executive Committee.
Brest Oblast and Anhui Province have maintained twinning relations since September 2017. The first steps were taken in the field of education. For instance, in 2018, a Center for Belarusian Studies was opened at Anhui University, with Pushkin Brest State University acting as the partner. At this university, a Confucius Institute was established two years later. Currently, around 500 students across 35 study groups are learning the Chinese language and culture there. Interregional relations are also developing. Specifically, twinning agreements have been concluded between Brest and Hefei, and between Bereza District and the city of Bengbu.
“Acknowledging our immense mutual potential, we are striving to find opportunities for practical cooperation in trade, economic, and investment sectors. China is one of Belarus’ main partners overall, and Brest Oblast’s in particular. Foreign trade with our region has increased severalfold in recent years, up 2.6 times. Moving towards an all-weather and comprehensive strategic partnership, representatives of Chinese businesses have invested over $200 million in the region’s economy over the past few years,” Piotr Parkhomchik said.
He pointed out that major projects in Brest Oblast are being implemented precisely with business representatives from Anhui Province. Examples include launching household appliance production. During the current visit, agreements were reached to multiply production volumes in 2026. Brestmash, in cooperation with JAC MOTORS, is engaged in assembling light-duty trucks. Brest Oblast is also interested in partnering with another company from Anhui Province.
“We would like to propose a project to establish production of hoisting and transport equipment in Brest Oblast. We are ready to discuss various options: from creating a joint venture to building our own company with a full range of services,” the Brest Oblast governor said.
According to Piotr Parkhomchik, the Belarusian and Chinese regions possess significant tourism potential that could be utilized more actively. The Brest Oblast head proposed considering the possibility of implementing a joint pilot project to organize a direct flight between Brest and Hefei.
Following the visit to China, Brest Oblast will draft a working plan for developing cooperation with Anhui Province for the 2026-2027 period. It will include items in humanitarian, social and cultural sectors, as well as proposals in the field of economics and investment cooperation. “We are sincerely interested in further expanding trade, economic, and investment cooperation with Anhui Province, deepening interregional interaction and socio-cultural ties with our twin regions,” the Brest Oblast governor said.
The delegation from Brest Oblast is visiting China on 6-11 December. The program includes meetings, negotiations, signing contracts and agreements, and visiting leading enterprises. Initially, the representatives from Brest Oblast worked in Shanghai, then in the city of Hefei.
