BelNPP’s environmental safety substantiation found compliant with IAEA recommendations

BelNPP’s environmental safety substantiation found compliant with IAEA recommendations

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian Energy Ministry has received a final statement from an expert commission tasked with evaluating Belarusian nuclear power plant environmental safety materials as part of an international public initiative, BelTA has learned.

In September 2019 an independent group of international experts from eight countries (Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia) analyzed the documents that substantiate the environmental safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. It was done upon the initiative of the Belarusian Energy Ministry with assistance of the municipality development assistance fund ATR AES Fund.

The conclusion released by the expert commission reads that the provided documents present an exhaustive overview of the planned measures designed to ensure nuclear, radiation, and environmental safety. The substantiation is fully compliant with the norms and rules specified by Belarusian laws and IAEA recommendations. The possible environmental impact from operating the Belarusian nuclear power plant is within acceptable limits. The conclusion emphasizes that measurements of background radiation before the Belarusian nuclear power plant went online will be used as a reference point for further evaluation of the radioecological impact of the nuclear power plant.

The experts also mentioned well-organized interaction and regular sharing of information about progress in implementing the project with the population. They believe the work encourages activity of interested population strata, including public organizations.

The experts recommend inviting international specialists and independent experts to monitor the radioecological situation in the observation area in the course of operation of the nuclear power plant.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. ASE Company is the general designer and general contractor in the project to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant. It also represents Rosatom’s engineering division.
