Belarusian nuclear power plant to receive nuclear fuel in autumn

Belarusian nuclear power plant to receive nuclear fuel in autumn

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Nuclear fuel for the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be delivered in autumn 2019, BelTA learned from Belarus Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk.

“We plan to deliver nuclear fuel to the plant four to six weeks before the reactor start-up. In September, the nuclear power plant will prepare to accept the delivery in line with all the appropriate regulations. We intend to ship the nuclear fuel to the plant this autumn,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk said.

He also explained why nuclear fuel should be delivered a month prior to the reactor start-up. “After the nuclear fuel is shipped to the plant by train, it is subject to an incoming inspection which takes roughly three weeks. Another week or two are required for other technological operations,” he noted.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast.
